Sycamore Street
At 5 Sycamore Street, we have delivered the refurbishment of a 14,000sqft six-storey office building. The brief involved updating both the interior and exterior of the building in order to upgrade building user experience and improve the external envelope of the building by creating an active street frontage. The site, located off of Old Street in Islington, was originally home to stable buildings, which made way for a four-storey warehouse. This was subsequently converted into an office building that sits on its own island plot, a rarity in the dense urban fabric of Clerkenwell.
The resulting design involved enlarging the existing ground floor openings, installing curtain walling and using blue glazed bricks and black metal to create a much more engaging frontage. The entrances were also opened up and backlit signage introduced to give the building an identity. Internally the reception area was given new, high-quality brass and terrazzo finishes. The ground floor slab was opened up creating a lightwell and walk on glazing, allowing natural light to flood into the basement office space and utilises the new full height curtain walling. All the office spaces were refurbished to include exposed services and modernised washroom facilities. The building’s secondary stair was removed in order to maximise saleable area and the main stair was refurbished with terrazzo treads and woven brass mesh balustrade. Finally, a bikestore was created in the basement including lockers, a drying area and shower facilities.
