The first phase of the Peterborough Station Quarter regeneration has taken a major step forward, with Government approval now secured for the £47.8 million business case. Led by Peterborough City Council in partnership with LNER, Network Rail, and the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, the project will enhance connectivity, accessibility, and the quality of the surrounding environment.

“A redeveloped Station Quarter for Peterborough will unlock opportunities for investment, homes, jobs, and growth, delivering a landmark gateway to the city which will welcome residents and visitors alike. The submission of the Full Business Case is an important step in moving this partnership project forward and delivering transport-led regeneration for the people of East Anglia.” Robin Dobson, Director at Network Rail Property.

Key plans include a refurbished and extended station, improved pedestrian and cyclist routes, new public spaces, and the unlocking of land for business development, housing, and job opportunities. With strong public support, the first phase, known as the ‘City Link,’ is expected to begin later this year.

The wider masterplan, directed by Arup, sets out a transformational vision for Peterborough Station Quarter, enhancing both the western and eastern fronts of the station. Supporting this vision is a multidisciplinary team of leading design specialists: Landolt + Brown are the architects for the new station, LDA Design are responsible for the landscape and public realm, Fatkin are designing the new multi-storey car park, and GPAD are overseeing the strategic plot development - ensuring the delivery of homes and workplaces is integrated, characterful, and commercially sustainable. This coordinated approach ensures that architecture, infrastructure, and public space work seamlessly together to deliver a coherent and welcoming gateway to Peterborough.

Early concept design for a new mixed-use neighbourhood west of the station.

To the west, the scheme draws on the site’s industrial character to inform a new mixed-use neighbourhood. Supporting infrastructure, including a multi-storey car park and integrated transport hub, will underpin the station’s transformation.

The eastern side focuses on creating a civic gateway that integrates historic elements with modern connectivity, including a reimagined station plaza, ‘Best in Class’ workspace, retail arcade, and enhanced pedestrian links to Market Square.
