Description

At the City of London Freemen’s School, we transformed a former assembly hall into a vibrant dining and social space designed around wellbeing, flexibility and community. Working within a retained 762 sqm building envelope and a tight construction programme aligned with the academic calendar, we reimagined the space to support over 330 students across two levels through the introduction of a carefully integrated mezzanine.

The project prioritised re-use and low-impact intervention, retaining the existing structure, glazing and services infrastructure to reduce embodied carbon and construction waste, while natural ventilation, thermal mass and upgraded insulation improve environmental performance. Creating a healthy and comfortable environment shaped every design decision, from calm colours and low-VOC finishes to warm timber elements and maximised daylight through retained high-level glazing. A sculptural wood-wool acoustic ceiling improves comfort and concentration, transforming a noisy institutional hall into a calmer, more inclusive and adaptable shared space.
