Great Sutton Street
At Great Sutton Street, GPAD oversaw the refurbishment of a locally listed former dairy dating from 1886, and the adjacent contemporary office building redevelopment. Located in the Clerkenwell Smithfields area of special character, the scheme consists of five floors of refreshed flexible office space and a new roof terrace. At the core of the scheme was the bringing together of the two distinct elements with a coherent language. The resulting design creates a link between the two facades at street level, whilst allowing each to display their origins. Work to the older façade was kept in keeping with its heritage, whilst the contemporary side has been enhanced with a grey glazed brick at street level, which along with new glazing and metalwork provide an aesthetic rhythm to the new frontage.
The interior has been given a refined yet industrial look, with features selected to match not only the building but also how they complement the surrounding area. Maximising the use of space, we also oversaw the repurposing of the basement, perceived as an unusable space previously. Alongside the new roof terrace providing an outside breakout space, the refurbished building also contains 40 cycle storage spaces and new shower facilities to encourage healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. The project timescale was a challenge, as we worked to a very tight design programme. The planners in the area are fastidious about maintaining local character and our design had to build upon that.
