Planning Granted for Amersham Road House
GPAD has been granted planning permission for a new three-bedroom family home on a highly constrained infill site on Amersham Road in New Cross.
The project replaces three existing garages with a carefully sculpted, three-storey home shaped around the challenges of the site. The client’s ambitious and creative brief gave us the freedom to develop a contemporary and distinctive response to a tight urban setting.
Its massing follows the scale and rhythm of the neighbouring terraces, while a series of setbacks creates pocket gardens and a south-facing roof terrace, with planting cascading down the building. Perforated light-toned brickwork wraps the ground-floor garden spaces, balancing privacy and enclosure with light, air and glimpses of greenery. A regular grid of silver-toned metal panels and timber-framed windows gives the elevations a strong contemporary character.
The scheme is a compact example of the kind of design challenge we enjoy at GPAD: using careful planning, craft and technical resolution to unlock overlooked sites and create generous, high-quality places.
We’re pleased to see the project featured by Architects’ Journal, following our recent contribution to the debate around infill housing and how constrained urban land can contribute to great new homes.
